Restaurants
Section guide
At a Glance
One of the best ways to get to know a place is through its food. The Triangle is home to an extraordinary mix of restaurants, from longtime local institutions and legendary barbecue joints to chef-driven destinations and neighborhood favorites woven into their communities. Some are elegant, some are casual, and others look unassuming from the street. What they share is a sense of place—and meals you remember long after the last bite.
If you are looking for P.F. Chang’s, The Cheesecake Factory, or Subway, a quick Google search will point the way. You will not find them here. The restaurants on the following pages were chosen because they are distinctive and offer something that cannot simply be duplicated anywhere in the world. This is not a ranking of the most expensive places or those with the highest online ratings. It is a collection of restaurants that feel like an experience: the place a local tells you about, where you take visiting friends, celebrate a milestone, discover a new favorite dish, or find yourself talking about afterward. If you are in the Triangle, these are places worth knowing.

Manning’s on Main
Downtown Clayton
A downtown Clayton restaurant serving modern American food with Southern and coastal influences, plus rooftop dining and private-event spaces.
- Dayan’s thoughts
- Manning’s on Main adds something special to the downtown Clayton experience. I have had the opportunity to meet owner and chef Howard Manning and tour the restaurant. His impressive culinary background includes formal training at Johnson & Wales University, experience throughout the South, and time spent studying and cooking in France. His food blends his Southern and coastal roots with techniques and influences gathered along the way. I was especially struck by the care given to the barbecue. Manning’s prepares its meats traditionally in a large barrel smoker behind the restaurant, reflecting a genuine commitment to doing things properly. The restaurant also has an upstairs space for wedding dinners, private events, and other gatherings, plus a rooftop dining area. With several dining and event spaces, Manning’s offers more than a meal. It is part of downtown Clayton’s social and dining scene. I was impressed by both the food and what Howard has built, and I recommend it to clients who want to experience what makes downtown Clayton special.
- Dayan’s choice
- Beef short rib entrée.
- Dayan’s suggestion
- On a nice day, dine upstairs in the outdoor area.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a 55+ community?
A 55+ community is a neighborhood with age restrictions, usually requiring at least one resident in each home to be 55 or older. These communities are designed for active adults and often offer amenities such as clubhouses, pools, pickleball, social activities, and other lifestyle features. The biggest differences from a traditional neighborhood are the age restrictions and the focus on lifestyle.
Who qualifies to live in a 55+ community?
Usually, at least one person on the lease or deed must be 55 or older. However, the requirements vary by community. Some communities allow up to 20% of residents to be as young as 50. It is important to confirm the specific rules before purchasing.
Can someone under 55 live in a 55+ community?
Sometimes. Exceptions may apply to spouses, caregivers, or other circumstances, but the rules vary by community and HOA. In many communities, if one person in the home is 55 or older, other people under the age requirement may also live there. Always confirm the specific requirements before making assumptions.
Are children allowed in a 55+ community?
Children age 18 and younger may visit. Each community has its own rules about the length of those visits. In most communities, anyone age 19 or older may be permitted to live in the home, as long as the household meets the community's age requirements.
Are pets allowed in 55+ communities?
Often, yes. However, communities may have restrictions on the number, size, or breed of pets. Be sure to review the specific community's pet policy.
What's the difference between an active adult community and a traditional neighborhood?
Active adult communities focus on lifestyle amenities and are designed specifically for older adults. Traditional neighborhoods are generally open to all ages and typically do not offer the same level of age-specific amenities and programming.
How do I choose the right 55+ community?
Start with your lifestyle priorities, budget, HOA fees, preferred amenities, and location. I recommend visiting multiple communities, exploring the amenities, talking with residents when possible, and looking at future development plans. It is important to consider not just the home, but whether the overall community fits your lifestyle.
How do I compare multiple 55+ communities?
Before you tour any communities, make a checklist of what you are looking for. Think about whether you prefer a larger or smaller community, and list the amenities that matter to you. Understanding what you need before you start touring will make the process much easier. Visit a couple of homes in each community, explore the amenities, compare HOA fees, and review the community's rules and future plans. Then take some time between tours to discuss your impressions. I strongly suggest taking notes. Many communities have some overlap, while others are completely different in what they offer. Keeping a log of what you experienced, what you enjoyed, and what you did not care for will help you keep track.
Can you help me tour multiple 55+ communities?
Yes. When touring multiple 55+ communities, I generally recommend a maximum of three communities per day. There is a lot of information to absorb, and limiting the number of communities helps make the experience more productive and less overwhelming. For each community, we can review the amenities, discuss fees and future development, look at HOA rules that may be important to you, and note your overall impressions so you can make an informed comparison later.
Which communities are best for an active lifestyle?
Look for communities that offer amenities such as fitness centers, pickleball, tennis, walking trails, pools, clubs, and regular social activities. Amenities on a brochure only tell part of the story. It is also important to experience the community in person and get a feel for how active and engaging the lifestyle actually is.
Are fences allowed in 55+ communities?
Most communities allow fences, but many require a certain type so everything stays consistent throughout the neighborhood. HOA rules regarding fences and other exterior changes vary by community. Always review the specific HOA documents and guidelines for the neighborhood you are considering before making any commitments.
Let’s plan your Triangle move.
